How this works

Each row is the run length with ten percent added for the route the cable really takes, multiplied by the number of conductors and the price per foot, plus the conduit for that length. The ten percent is not padding: a run measured on a plan goes up a wall, across joists and back down, and the three feet you need at each end to make up in a box has to come from somewhere.

Frequently asked questions

How much waste should I allow on conductor?

Ten percent on the run plus about three feet at each end for making up. On short runs the three feet dominates and ten percent is nothing; on a 200 ft feeder it is the other way round. Either way, ordering the plan length exactly is how a job stops twenty feet short on a Friday afternoon.

Should the takeoff include labour?

Not in this sheet β€” it is material, which is the part that can be counted from a drawing. Labour scales with terminations, bends and access rather than with feet, so mixing the two produces a number that cannot be checked against either a supplier quote or an hourly rate.

Why price conduit per foot rather than per length?

Because pipe is sold in ten-foot lengths and used in fractions of them, and the offcuts get used elsewhere on the same job. Per foot with a fittings allowance on top tracks the invoice more closely than counting sticks does.

How we calculate this

Each row is (length Γ— 1.1 Γ— number of conductors Γ— price per foot of conductor) + (length Γ— price per foot of conduit). The 1.1 is a ten percent route allowance applied to the conductor only, since conduit follows the measured path. Rows are summed before rounding. The fittings line adds a flat fifteen percent, which is a planning figure rather than a calculation β€” couplings, straps, boxes and connectors depend on the number of direction changes, not on the length. No labour, no tax and no delivery are included.
